All right, there hasn't been a post here in a while so, I thought I'd go with something a number of other forums have discussed before.

3 biggest disappointments of the 4th generation and why.

mine would have to be (entirely in reference to standard competitive play),

1. Marowak

With the advent of trick room, He had such high potential as a trick room sweeper. Unfortunetly, it's become pretty easy to predict and switch into his only stab. Latias was the beginning of the fall for me. When you only get three trick room turns to do damage, he really needs to use all of them well. Even if you predict latias, he can't come close to the OHKO he needs with Stone Edge, assuming you even make contact. He's just quite predictable and doesn't have the typing complement to his respectable defenses to reliably stay in outside of trick room. A trick room sweeper generally wants to operate pretty straight forward. When you find yourself having to make pinpoint predictions on every single move, you better be right much more often then you are wrong, or life is going to be testy.


2. Electivire

Great potential coverage on the physical sweeper set. Great ability at face value. But his movepool lacks the physical-based power to use it effectively, even if he gets a motor drive boost. His base speed is wanting, resulting in a general trend of losing out to other, faster options. He lacks the necessary bulk/defenses + typing to make up for his flaws.

3. Weavile

It's been said once, it'll be said again, Scizor + Bullet Punch = Usage Death.

Disgrace to fire-type starters.

2. Bidoof.

Enough said.

3. Scizor(Competitive.)

Probably the most over-used Pokemon I've seen in a while. Choice Band + Bullet Punch= bitch.

I disagree completely with point #4 because the thread ideally should target players who want to discuss pokemon from the fourth generation who got a lot of hype surrounding potential/popular competitive battling strategies and never lived up to that hype as the battling scheme changed/played out

I for example wrote entirely about Marowak's potential on competitive trick room teams, because coming into DP i wanted to use trick room right off the back to compete seriously. It's frustrating when you realize that the game has changed to the point where despite his power, other sweepers are more viable.

This is a strategy thread after all, right? What pokemon did you want to use most? How was it's strategy foiled as the metagame unfolded.

Scizor for example ruined Weavile. If Heracross wasn't quite fast enough (among other things) to compete over time, Weavile just wasn't bulky enough, or at least didn't have the right ammenities to keep its place as a high usage poke. Latias on the other hand, represents the major shift towards the now more common bulky sweeper.

Anyone want to mention stealth rock as a disappointment?

I felt it was a topic that would naturally appeal to competitive players. I mean, if you want to say that you were disappointed that Kricketune was a crappy pokemon in-game, that's fine. I think a more worthwhile topic to bring up would be the overall disappointment with how many bug/flying pokes continue to get put out despite the paltry usability of that combo, with a few exceptions.

That's kind of what has been discussed in the past. It's just a good heading for discussion of current strategems.

I would say Electivire, Weavile and Heracross. They were really good in D/P times, but Platinum has decreased usage drastically.

Platinum really hurt. 70% Accurate Hypnosis means that we lost a huge sleeper and a good lead.

2 Dusknoir

Pretty much sucks with that bad HP. Plus, it's best STAB is SHadow Sneak, which is unboosted.

1 Abomasnow

It's slow, has mediocre stats and has horrible typing. Abomasnow is one of those leads that rarely get a chance to set up, and it usually just switches out.

I find Magnezone to be the best CB Scizor eliminator I have ever used. Small role, but still useful when applicable. I think Froslass has found the place most sensible users predicted it would, a hail team spin stopper that can also set up spikes.

Leafeon was defeintly an overall disappointment. I still remember all the "Leafeon vs Glaceon" threads there used to be before DP came out.

Aqua Tail was definetly a big boost for tar. I can't tell you how many times it's owned a gliscor switch in that would otherwise readily threaten to taunt the shit out of me.

3. Luxray

Looks cool, but physical Electric types just don't cut it. Luxray's stuck with 65-power Spark or Thunder Fang, which makes it even worse than Electivire.

2. Persian.

My favorite Pokemon, yet still NU... No access to the elemental fangs, and despite Technician it's still outclassed by some purple monkey with a creepy smile...

1. Flareon.

Lack of Flare Blitz. 'Nuff said. I don't want to have to resort to Overheat as an STAB move...
